Welcome to the Distance Education (DE) area of the Team IDEAL web site. This area is for Distance Students and the activities here have been designed to enable off campus students to complete Team IDEAL. Dr. Rodger Marion is your mentor. You can learn a bit more about Rodger Marion from his bio sketch.
Team IDEAL consists of two one credit courses. You will work on the activities of the course before you sign up for it. Thus, you can work on the activities of the course in the Fall and Spring, then sign up for it, and complete your last activities, in the Summer. You need not sign up for the course in the Summer. You may sign up whenever you are near to completing the requirements. The requirements for Distance Students are:
- First Course - You need 70 stars to complete the first course of Team IDEAL. You can select from any of the Team IDEAL activities to build your own version of the course and tailor your experiences to your needs and interests. Distance students do not have a requirement to attend Featured Events as on-campus students do.
- Second Course - To complete the second course of Team IDEAL you develop and execute a capstone project. It is described more fully under the Capstone Project menu item on the left. Contact your departmental advisor or Dorothy Pearrow (hcavazos@utmb.edu or 409-772-9437) with questions and for additional information about second course activities.
Please note that if you are already an MLT or a RRT, you only need to complete one Team IDEAL course. Thus, you may meet the requirements of either the first course or the second course. Which course you choose is up to you and what you want to get out of the experience. Doing the first course will give you a broad exposure to all of the competencies and can be done mostly on-line. Do the second course if you want to do a capstone project and still pick up some exposure to other team IDEAL activities.
Also, during either course there are activities that focus on career development and the creation of a portfolio that can be used when seeking a job. You can earn stars doing these activities as well. See the Portfolio link or more information. It's in the menu on the upper left.
Below are described the activities we have developed specifically to enable distance education students to complete the first course of Team IDEAL. The activities as presented make a complete curriculum for distance students, and in addition any of the activities can be done by any Team IDEAL student.
Many of the activities make use of the on-line discussion feature of Team IDEAL discussion area is on the menu on the left.
Also, Team IDEAL uses the live streaming features of the Real Networks plug-in. Please download and install the latest FREE version of the Real Player from www.real.com. Be sure to choose the Free Download option.
Things to do:
- Step 1 - Plan for the activities you want to do to complete the course requirements. Below is a link to a list of activities selected especially for for distance students. You can add to and change this basic plan in any way you wish that will still meet the requirements. Please note that students use a process called silver stars (
)
to enter their Team IDEAL plan into the Activity Log and must have their plan
approved by their departmental advisor. Distance students can either create a
custom plan, just as on-campus students do, or accept the distance education set
of activities as a group. After logging in,
you can click here to create a complete plan based on the
distance education activities.
You can change this plan in the Activities Log as you wish. You can add any activity from the list of activities (Click on the Activities menu item to see all activities).
- Step 2 - Ask your departmental advisor to approve your plan when you are ready to begin doing the activities. Additional instructions about entering silver stars and getting your plan approved are on the Team IDEAL Home page.
- Step 3 - Get started with your own Team IDEAL program.

Activities for Distance Students in the First Course
In order to enable you to earn most of the stars required in the first course of the Team IDEAL Curriculum, we have developed activities adapted for DE students and they are grouped around areas of focus. You can pick and choose what you want to do. There are other ways to earn stars and they are described below and elsewhere on this web site. These options are our attempt to keep it simple. You can do these activities at your own pace.
- OPTION ONE: Research Focus
- Reflections on . . . There are seven Reflections activities. Each lets you explore one of the twelve Team IDEAL Competencies. Select the ones that focus on competencies that you want to learn more about. There is an eighth activity that is done concurrently with the other others. Below are links that describe each activity.
Note that there is an on-line class available for each reflection. The on-line class is a streaming video file that you view, and it provides insights into the topic of each reflection, and models how reflections can be done. Each class is fairly short and can be accessed from this page - Link to on-line class videos. The video will use the Real Player, so be sure you have the latest free version of the player installed.
Before you work on preparing one of the Reflections, do these two things. First, watch the on-line class video, and second review the previous postings about the reflection you are doing. The previous postings are in the Discussions (Click on the menu item on the upper left). You are encouraged to look at the postings of your classmates in the discussion area. It is important not only to do the activities yourself, but to see how others approached them as well. Also, do not use the same articles as previous participants but find your own unique approach to the topic. When you have done these two tasks, you can proceed to develop your selected Reflection. The details of each Reflection are discussed individually
When you have completed all the requirements for a Reflection, you can email Dr. Marion that you have completed an activity and update your records on the web site. When you have completed the requirements of an activity you can return to the Activities Log and change your silver stars to yellow "pending approval" stars ( ) by clicking on the "Thumbs Up" icon ( ).To add a new activity to your record of completed activities, click on the Add New Activity link. Scroll down the list of activities, click on the radio button, and press the Enter key. A check mark will appear. You can review your progress by clicking on the link to the Activity Log. Initially your new stars will be yellow. Your mentor, after reviewing your work, will approve your stars and they will turn red ( ).
When you have completed 5 Reflections and participated in 5 on-line classes, you can get credit for the eighth activity, Tools for Reflections. You do not have to do all 7 of the Reflections. You can just do as many as interest you, or select 5 of them to also complete the requirements for Tools for Reflections. You can only get credit for Tools for Reflections once.
You can do any activity at any time, and you will be able to interact with the other students via the discussion. Much can be learned by reading their postings to see how they explored the reflection topics. You may post your own comments to the other students.
- Tools for Reflections: This is the
eighth activity, and it is accomplished while you do the Reflections. It has two parts.
Part 1 is learning to use on-line tools and assessing professional articles. This part is completed by doing 5 Reflections. When you have completed the fifth Reflection you will earn 5 stars in the Research competency.
Part 2 deals with an aspect of professionalism. When you have participated in 5 on-line classes you will earn 3 stars in the Professional Role Development competency. See the description of Tools for more details.
- OPTION TWO: Community Focus
The two activities below are designed to enable you to explore the interdisciplinary connections among health care professions and institutions. They require you to make visits to health-related facilities in your community. These activities can be done at any time and at your convenience. You could build most of your Team IDEAL program around doing these two activities a number of times.
- Members of the Team Interviews: This activity may be done more than once. Doing it once, you will earn 6 stars (3 in Teamwork and 3 in Professional Role Development). Follow the link for more details.
- Health Service Agency Visits: This activity may be done more than once. Each time you do it, your will earn 6 stars (3 in Knowledge of Health Care Delivery Systems and 3 in Foundational Knowledge).
- Professional Shadowing Experience. Arrange to shadow another profession in a clinical setting for 4 or more hours. This activity is worth 5 stars and can be done more than once.
- Community Volunteer Service. Use this activity for any health care related activity that involves community service. Each activity is worth 5 stars. If you are doing one project on a continued basis for a semester or more, contact Dorothy Pearrow at hcavazos@utmb.edu to review the star allocation. The activity also can be done more than once.
- Brown Bag Lunches and Campus Speakers. Use this activity if you attend a presentation by a professional speaker outside of your discipline. This activity is worth 5 stars, and can be done more than once.
- OPTION THREE: On-line Case-based Focus
These activities use simulation to let you explore other cultures and complementary and alternative health care practices.
- Tools for Cultural Competency Redux - This is an on-line Featured Event that can be done individually. This activity may be done any time you chose. The Featured Event provides access to tools for learning about the cultural expectations of patients. This activity may be done by Distance Education Students and on-campus students who missed the on-campus Featured Event. It may not be done for credit if the student has already done Cultural Exploration - Tools for Working with Others (Approved activities 20030910 or 20030730). The competency focus of this activity is Cultural Awareness (12 stars overall).
- Integrative Therapies in Outpatient Rehabilitation - Redux - This is an on-line Featured Event and can be done individually. The Featured Event provides both an introduction to complementary and alternative therapies (CAM) in health care and practice with using the professional literature for research. This activity may be done by Distance Education Students and on-campus students who missed the on-campus Featured Event. It may not be done for credit if the student has already done Integrative Therapies in Outpatient Rehabilitation (Approved activities 20030528 or 20040215). The competency focus of this activity is Research (12 stars overall).
Featured Events
Featured Events are usually held on campus (With the exception of the two featured events above that have been adapted for distance students). You will receive announcements of on-campus events via email. If you are not receiving announcements, please contact Dorothy Pearrow (hcavazos@utmb.edu or 409-772-9437), and she will get you set up. You are welcome to participate in any Featured Event.
However, as a distance student, none are required.
Mentor Sponsored Activities
There are a number of additional approved activities that you can participate in if you wish. You can substitute any activity for the ones designed for distance students. The list of approved activities may be studied by clicking on the Activities menu item on the upper left. You can contact Dorothy Pearrow (hcavazos@utmb.edu or 409-772-9437), and she will send you the details of any activity you are interested in doing. Most of these are designed to be done on campus or in the Galveston area, and your stars are approved by the sponsor of the activity.
There is also a way to propose a new Activity. The form and directions can be seen on the Activities page. Email the form to Dorothy Pearrow (hcavazos@utmb.edu or 409-772-9437). She will review it, discuss it with you, and approve it. When it has been approved, you can do it. She will be the person to approve your stars as well.
