Team IDEAL Activity

Name of Activity: Agency Visits

Activity Mentor/Sponsor: Rodger Marion

Competencies:

  1. Knowledge of Health Care Delivery Systems - 3 stars
  2. Foundational Knowledge - 3 stars
Objectives:
  1. The student will have the opportunity to learn what services are provided and what kinds of patients are served by various health provider agencies and institutions.
  2. The student will have the opportunity to learn how their profession does/will/could interact with other health care agencies and institutions.
Describe the Activity:

  1. Select a health service agency or institution (other than the one where you work) that you want to learn more about. Identify a person who works at that agency. Make an appointment for 30/40 minutes with him/her. If you work in a hospital one of the hospital administrators or social workers can probably help you to identify a contact.
  2. Prepare for your visit by looking up the agency or institution on the web. Look up the professional association (Americal Hospital Association, Association of State and Territorial Health Officials, etc.), or see if the organizaion has its own personal web site.
  3. During your meeting, find out the services offered by the agency, the kinds of people served, the different professions that work there, and how they do/could work with your profession. Ask the person for an example of how they at one time worked with someone from your profession; ask them to be specific as to a patient or setting.
  4. Write a 500 word reflection on how your discipline does/could work with the agency/institution you are studying. Include the example you heard above.
  5. Turning in your reflection. Your essay will be graded by Dr. Rodger Marion. Go to the Discussions (Click on the menu item at the upper left). In the Discussions there is a topic titled Reflections on . . . , Members of the Team Interviews, and Health Service Agency Visits. Post your essay under that topic. Email Dr. Marion (rmarion@utmb.edu) that you have added this activity. Dr. Marion will read your posting and if it meets the criteria, he will approve your stars in the Activity Tracking chart in the Log On section of the Team Ideal web site. If your work is not acceptable, you will have an opportunity to revise it.
  6. You are encouraged to read the postings from other students to learn what they discovered on their visits. You can also post comments to them.
