YOU CAN HELP!

If, while working in the TeamIDEAL website, the system becomes non-responsive or crashes; please send Brian an email describing to the best of your ability what you were working on when the system locked up.  Thanks!

Doing Research on the Web

  1. Go to http://ar.utmb.edu/portals/mml_portal.asp which will take you to Moody Medical Library.

  2. Click on Ovid: Medline

  3. A search engine will come up. Type in terms that define the topic you are seeking, for example “smoking cessation”, in the Keyword Box. Underneath this box there are a series of Limits. Click on the box for full text located just below. Right below this box is a location for dates. Usually, you want to look at fairly recent research, so type in 2000-2006 or the years you wish to use. When done, click on the red “Search”.

  4. The computer will then give you options for refining your research with similar subject headings; in most cases you will just want to click on “continue” for the next two pages. The result will probably be a large number of articles (over 2,000 in our initial smoking cessation example). You can either scroll through these until you find an article you like or you can narrow your search. Decide how you want to narrow your search by combining the original search (see search # in the Search History table) with additional terms. For example, in our “smoking cessation” example above, enter “2 and adult” (the “and” is needed).

  5. The computer will give you a listing of articles (scroll down or hit the blue Display key on the right hand side) When you find an article that interests you, go to the full text indicator and click on it to go to the full article.
